Magnitogorsk, the second largest city in the region, is one of the biggest industrial centers in Russia.

It is situated on the eastern slope of the South Urals, on the river Ural.

Iron-ore deposits of Magnitnaya mount were found in 1740s. In 1743 the Cossack fortress, the Magnitnaya stanitsa, was built nearby. It was one of the base stations of the Orenburg frontier line. Two centuries later in 1929 the construction of the gigantic plant began near mount Magnitnaya.

City's economy

The leading branches of industry are ferrous metallurgy, machine-building, metal-working, forest, woodworking and pulp and paper industry, flour-and-cereals and mixed fodder industry, industry of building materials.

In 2001 industry comprised 88,4%, building – 6,0%, transport and communications – 1,4%, trade and public catering – 0,5% in the structure of production.
