The city is situated along the banks of the rivers Kusa and Ai (tributary of the Ufa).

It was founded in 1778 as a result of the construction of the iron-smelting, casting and iron-producing plant on the river Kusa by M.L.Luginin. In 1880s the production of cast-iron decorative castings was opened. Since then the plant competes with Kasli in this sphere. The production of agricultural instruments started in 1906.

Nature sanctuaries: Maksimilianov and Ahmatov mines (from 1811, around 40 minerals), cliff Arguz on the river Ai, mount Karandash (Pencil), cliff Chertov Posad.

 

City's economy

The production of iron-cast decorative castings was opened in 1880s (since then it has been successfully competing with the works of the Kasli plant). The production of agricultural instruments started in 1906.

Plants: machine building (the production of stokers, economizers, crushers, pumps), of accurate technical stones (clock and nature stones, diamond instruments, jewelry and so on). Timber cutting and marble mining are carried out in the Kusa region. There is Medvedevskoe deposit of ilmenite magnetite ores. 

The leading branches of industry are power industry, ferrous metallurgy, machine-building, metal-working (without medical equipment production), forest, woodworking and pulp and paper industry, food industry, industry of building materials.

In 2001 industry comprised 88,4%, agriculture – 0,2%, transport and communications – 8,4%, trade and public catering – 0,4% in the structure of production. 

Dairy and meat farming, poultry keeping prevail in agriculture. Potato, vegetable, fruit and berry growing is developed.
